Effect of Drinking Water Fluoride on Apoptosis of Testis and Epididymis in Normal Rats

Abstract
Although an excess intake of drinking water fluoride has been reported to cause various systemic diseases, very little is known about adverse effects of fluoride on testis and epididymis. Apptosis has been broadened to include a variety of injuries characterized by DNA fragmentation which was resulted from the killing of cell types by toxic chemicals.
The purpose of this study was to investigate apoptosis of testis and epididymis in normal exposed to drinking water containing optimum fluoride concentration through in situ TdT method. The severity of appoptosis was found to increase significantly in spermatids of testis exposed to drinking water, whereas basal cells of eididmys showed slight increased apoptosis in experimental group. Daily drinking water contraning optimum fluoride would be more harmful to spermatids of rat testis and basal cells of epididymis, which would result in reduced sperm production.
